Moving Checklist

Moving Checklist

Looking to move and need some help?

We get it! Let Hamilton Road Self Storage help with this handy moving checklist starting a month before your move.

One Month Before

  • Make a thorough inventory of your home. Decide what you want to keep and what you would like to discard.
  • Select a moving company or reserve a rental truck.
  • If applicable, reserve moving equipment for the day of the move. Be realistic, recruit friends to help and don't try anything too risky.
  • Plan the quickest route to your new location. Most trucks need at least a 14-foot clearance under bridges and underpasses. If you are moving a long distance, make necessary travel bookings.
  • If you think it is necessary consider purchasing insurance for your belongings.
  • Start by packing the things that you don't frequently use.
  • Keep track of all your moving-related documents and receipts. Some moving expenses are tax deductible.

Two Weeks Before

  • As soon as you have your new address remember to contact and update all companies on your move:
    • Utility Companies (ex. electric, water, gas, etc...)
    • Phone
    • Bank
    • Credit Card Companies
    • Other Financial Institutions
    • Insurance: car, health, etc...
    • Monthly Subscription Services
  • Set up mail forwarding with your local post office.
  • Reserve a storage space if necessary.
  • Map out a floor plan if you are working with a team of movers.

One Week Before

  • Finish packing.
  • Label boxes appropriately.
  • Confirm any reservations you may have arranged for your travel or move.
  • Make sure to separate and pack what each person in your household needs to travel.
  • Remember to pack strategically. Keep important documents, medications, foods, etc...with you and put the most important items within easy reach for when you reach your destination.

One Day Before

Make sure you have the following items on hand:
  • The keys to your new home and a plan of what to do with your current keys when you leave.
  • Any directions you may need to get to your new home!
  • All of your moving-related documents.
  • Do a final walk-through of the house. Take pictures and videos just in case!
  • Your travel bag with all your necessities to get to your new home.

Moving Day

  • If you have a moving truck try to make space for them outside your new home. If you're moving to an urban area be prepared and have a plan for how to create space for a moving truck in the area and in front of your new house.
  • Pick up your rental truck if you have one, make sure the movers are on schedule or pack the car and go!
  • Be sure to have your moving-related documents, including a list of your belongings to verify that everything has arrived.
  • Once the movers or the rental truck has arrived and has been unloaded, check for damages. Make a list of any damages so that you can provide the moving company with details, if necessary.
  • Plug in your large appliances and electronic equipment.
  • Make sure you have easy access to those important items you will need the first few days of living in a new place.
